On Tuesday, the 23rd of October, some of our Year 5 and 6 students were lucky enough to have the experience of going to the Invictus Games. It took about 15 minutes to get to the venue at Sydney Olympic Park. When we first arrived we looked at some plaques from the original Olympic Games and Miss Close’s name was there.
After we settled in we went in and were given official Invictus Games hats and bags. We went through the doors and sat down in one of the stadiums. There was a man who introduced the event which was wheelchair basketball. We all got to play and it was a lot harder than it looked.
As we were walking to see the wheelchair rugby, we ran into the famous Olympic swimmer, Ian Thorpe. Some of us even got a photo with him.
We got our tickets checked at the next stadium and got given signs to hold up during the wheelchair rugby. They had messages like “You are my hero!” and “You’re amazing”. We walked in half way through the game of Australia against France. Australia won 28-8. They recorded people in the audience dancing and showed it on the big screen.
After the rugby we went to a park to eat our lunch. On the way there we got some red furry hats that were being given out for free. We played for a while then it was time to go back to the bus and go back to school.
It was an exciting experience because of all the memorable moments like seeing famous people and playing unique games. The athletes kept on going and never gave up. We learnt that everyone can do the same things as others, even if they have disabilities, they can find a way. We can all achieve our dreams as long as we believe in ourselves. I think all of the students who attended would agree it was an amazing experience.
