Extra-curricular activities

At Hilltop Road, we offer our students opportunities to participate in extra curricular activities during and after school.

Some of these include:

  • Active After School Communities (AASC), a sports based program
  • art club, offered during school lunch times
  • Aboriginal homework and culture club after school assistance with homework for our aboriginal students where they also learn about their aboriginal culture
  • guitar club, offered to students who have an interest in playing a musical instrument such as the guitar.

Most of the above activities are implemented by the talented teachers of our school, who effortlessly give up their own time to encourage and develop students' abilities.

Student representative council

The student representative council (SRC) is a student body within the school which allows all students to have their say about how the school is run. Each class, Years 1 to 6, elects two class captains who act as student representatives.

SRC meetings are to be held on a fortnightly basis during the first half of a lunch on a nominated day. School captains are responsible for the chairing of meetings and reporting information to the principal or relevant person.

Student representative council goals and duties

SRC goals and duties include the following:

  • fundraising
  • event management and organisation
  • address issues raised by representatives at SRC meetings
  • running of Years 3 to 6 assemblies
  • reporting to Kindergarten to Year 2 assembly
  • formal assemblies
  • welcoming and thanking school guests
  • Kindergarten orientation.

Art club

The Hilltop Road Public School art club has been operating each Thursday afternoon after school in 2013. The students involved enjoy demonstrating their creative talents in a relaxed and social atmosphere. Teachers coordinate the club and have been very pleased with the commitment, creativity and willingness of students to build a friendly and welcoming environment for self-expression through art.

Culture club

Hilltop Road culture club is a joint partnership between Hilltop Road Public School and Cumberland Women's Health Centre. The club runs every Tuesday afternoon of the school term from 3pm to 4:30pm. Attendance is open to all children and families with Aboriginal background. There is no cost to attend the group, no extra equipment necessary and the group is fully supervised.

The afternoon begins with some time spent on weekly class homework supervised by our wonderful Hilltop Road teachers, followed by afternoon tea and drinks which are provided for all children attending. Following this, culture club runs from 3:30pm to 4:30pm, at this time the group has the fantastic opportunity to learn more about their indigenous heritage through yarning and cultural connection.

Activities this term will focus on traditional storytelling, and incorporating weaving, art skills and language. Through the remainder of the year we will be learning some traditional dancing and music as well as looking at some bush tucker and traditional foods. Watch this space for regular updates from our teachers and students showcasing the fantastic things we will be doing.
