High potential and gifted education (HPGE)
At Hilltop Road Public School, we believe every learner is unique and capable of achieving excellence in different ways. We recognise some students learn faster and more easily than others. High potential and gifted learners may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport. We believe it is our responsibility to nurture, challenge, and inspire high potential and gifted learners to reach their full potential. Students are provided with rich, differentiated learning experiences that identify and extend their strengths, talents, and interests across all areas of learning.
We work in partnership with families and the wider community to identify and nurture high potential and gifted learners. Through purposeful programming, enrichment, and co-curricular opportunities, we empower every student to grow, achieve, and flourish. At Hilltop Road Public School, we recognise and nurture strengths early, to support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
We are committed to recognising and nurturing high potential and gifted students. Our staff provide tailored learning programs and environments to support each learner to thrive.
Staff engage in professional learning and robust collaborative systems to deliver evidence informed teaching practices that challenge and extend students.
Here are some of the evidence-based teaching strategies used in the classroom to support all students:
- Differentiated Learning Tasks and Grouping
Tailoring teaching methods and materials to meet diverse learners' needs, abilities, and interests. Students can work individually, in pairs, or flexible groups based on interests or abilities, to deepen knowledge, foster collaboration and develop social skills.
- Explicit Teaching
Using evidence-based programs, teachers provide clear, direct instruction with step-by-step demonstrations and guided practice.
- Formative Assessment
Teachers use regular, informal assessments to monitor student progress to identity areas for growth.
- Feedback
Providing timely, specific, and constructive feedback to help students excel in key learning areas and achieve personal learning goals.
- Questioning Techniques
Using open-ended, higher-order questions to promote critical thinking and engagement.
-
Ongoing Professional Learning and Collaboration
Teachers regularly engage in professional development on HPGE strategies and collaborate to share best practices to support all students in achieving their personal learning goals.
Our school recognises that every student is individual, and we provide flexible and diverse opportunities for students to explore and grow their strengths outside the classroom. Our school offers a range of whole-school programs that support student growth.
